You will still play as Link, who is a Hylian that is an expert in combat, using swords, shields, and various other items. Link sails on a boat, got hit by a storm and is washed off a shore. A girl named Marin saves Link.

When Marin’s father gives back your shield, it is time Link leaves and tries to leave the island and get back home. In this island, Link will meet a wise old owl that speaks of the secrets of this island. In Link’s quest, he must find and collect eight instruments that are hidden inside dungeons filled with difficult mazes and puzzles. The owl tells Link that the only way to leave the island is to awaken Wind Fish, the ruler of the island. Link will need to use the eight instruments to awaken Wind Fish. As the game progresses, Link will learn more of the island and see that it isn’t what it seems to be.

The game play of Zelda: Link’s awakening is at its best. Like the other Zelda games, you are required to explore the complicated dungeons over the massive world map. Dungeons contain various rooms with many enemies that you’ll have to finish off using that trusty sword of yours. The new stone slabs can give you helpful hints once you find its missing pieces. There are also lots of treasure chests that contains the keys that you’ll need to open some doors, compasses that tell you where the keys are, and maps that you can use whenever you get lost. In each dungeon is a special item that will give you interesting abilities, like a bracelet that will help you lift up heavy objects, feathers that will allow you jump, and much more. You’ll need to fight a nightmare in order to obtain the instruments that you are looking for. You’ll find that this game is exciting and fun though sometimes is frustrating whenever you get lost. A plus in this game is some areas where the environment becomes 2D side scrolling.

When it comes to its graphics, this is a very good one. This game fully utilized the limited abilities of GameBoy in terms of graphics. It presented the game well. The character designs are very pleasing, which makes the game all the more interesting.
